About the 5 Rhythms®

About the 5 Rhythms image

“When we dance we feel awake plugged in to life, we discover an energetic language that releases us and allows us to be the dance rather than do the dance. There is a force of energy that reveals us to ourselves in action, alone, together as a tribe. The body becomes a fluid entity, we discover our feet and stop holding our breath.”

Gabrielle Roth

Each of the 5 individual rhythms focuses on a particular simple movement quality rather than specific steps. This gives sufficient structure in a class to make dance highly accessible to all regardless of age or experience and sufficient freedom to reduce the pressure of “getting it right”.

The benefits of performing the 5 Rhythms include:

  • Increased Physical fitness and flexibility

  • Unlocking creative expression

  • Channeling the emotions

  • Creating awareness

  • Enhancing state of well being

“In the Heartbeat map of the 5 Rhythms we discover our emotions as energy, as power, as part of being human. Old feelings that have been locked away in our limbs or caged in our chest begin to shake loose. We get comfortable with feelings. We learn to Love and see how badly we want it and need it.”

Gabrielle Roth

The Five Rhythms are flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. They come together to create the Wave. Each rhythm reflects an aspect of human nature and brings its own results when you move to that rhythm. Find out more about them below:

Flowing
Flowing (earth)
In flowing we connect to the ground beneath our feet , we become an endless stream of creative energy in motion, learning to become receptive to our own unique flow of energy while grounding us.

Stacatto
Stacatto (fire)

Staccato connects us the heart and the beat, we discover how to step out into the world setting boundries with clarity and truth.

Chaos
Chaos (water)

Chaos teaches us about letting go into the unknown, how to find trust when we don't know what is ahead. Chaos sets us free into the moment, shattering our illusions of who we think we are into a place of real Artistry.

Lyrical image
Lyrical (air)

Lyrical teaches us how to 'lighten up' it is a soulful place of creativity and imagination. It is expansive and we feel uplifted , yet grounded, free and individual in our expression.

Stillness image
Stillness (zen)

In stillness we connect to the stillness inside while in motion. We move inside the stillness. We feel the emptiness within. It is our final destination into the poet of the dance and holds in it echoes of all the other rhythms.
